Triumphal Arch

The Triumphal Arch appeared at the entrance to Bendery on Ermakov Street on October 7, 2008, unveiled on the eve of the city’s magnificent 600th anniversary celebration — a fitting architectural tribute to six centuries of history. The project was developed by architects V. Frolkov, B. Filimonov and I. Kibich, while every metal element of the monument was meticulously handcrafted by A.A. Alyokhin, an employee of the Bendery Historical and Local Lore Museum — a remarkable achievement of individual artisanal skill.

The arch’s upper portion features a striking bas-relief of a double-headed eagle, while the columns display a rich array of decorative military attributes including a helmet, an axe and a poleaxe — symbolic embodiments of the glory of Russian weaponry and the martial heritage that defines so much of Bendery’s identity.

In a thoughtful nod to historical tradition, the front face of the arch deliberately faces the road leading into the city — preserving an ancient architectural convention according to which triumphal gates were always oriented as a facade toward the approaching traveler, welcoming all who enter Bendery through this ceremonial gateway into one of Pridnestrovie’s most historically significant cities.
