Dubossary Hydro Power Plant

In 1955, the Dubossary Hydro Power Plant became the first hydroelectric station ever built on the Dniester River — a milestone of Soviet engineering that marked the beginning of centralized electricity supply throughout this entire region. Since that historic moment, the plant has supplied electricity to Pridnestrovie without interruption for seven consecutive decades.

The construction of the plant was a genuinely all-Union effort: enterprises from across the Soviet Union contributed to the project, with thousands of workers representing more than thirty different nationalities laboring together over five years to bring this ambitious undertaking to completion. The human scale of this achievement was as remarkable as its engineering ambition.

The plant’s excellence earned national recognition in 1977, when it was presented at the Exhibition of National Economy Achievements of the USSR as a power station of exceptionally high reliability and automation. The HPP team was honored with inclusion in the Republican Book of Honor of Leading Enterprises, while the power plant itself was incorporated into an all-Union tourist route — an acknowledgment that this facility was not only industrially significant but genuinely worth visiting.

Today, the Dubossary Reservoir created by the hydroelectric dam has become one of the most picturesque locations in the entire region, with rich natural surroundings and scenic views that consistently attract visitors seeking to appreciate the beauty that has grown up around this piece of living industrial history. The popular beach beside the reservoir has become one of the most beloved recreational spots in Pridnestrovie.
