The idea to create a monument honoring the builders and first employees of the Moldovan HPP originated with G.P. Chior, the plant’s Director, who recognized the need to immortalize the extraordinary human effort that brought this enormous facility — and the city of Dnestrovsk itself — into existence. The resulting sculpture has become the defining landmark of the entire town.
The magnificent statue that was created depicts a figure of the flying Prometheus — the celebrated hero of Greek mythology who stole fire from the gods to give it to humanity. The choice of subject matter is profoundly apt for a city built around the generation and distribution of electrical power: Prometheus, the bringer of fire and light to mankind, serves as a perfect mythological embodiment of the energy engineers whose work powers Pridnestrovie and its neighbors. The figure is mounted on two pylons of different heights, giving the sculpture a dynamic sense of upward motion that enhances the feeling of flight.
Installed on Energetikov Boulevard — the main thoroughfare of Dnestrovsk — in the very center of the city, the Prometheus statue is universally regarded as the principal monument and defining symbol of Dnestrovsk, recognized immediately by every resident and visitor as the emblem of this unique city of power engineers.
