The Dnestr Health Resort holds the distinction of being the oldest spa destination in the entire region, with a reputation extending far beyond the borders of Pridnestrovie. Its favorable geographical location amid beautiful hilly landscapes and a mild, pleasant climate has drawn thousands of health-seeking visitors each year throughout its long operational history.
Kamenka’s therapeutic tradition stretches back to the 1870s, when the town earned fame as the first resort in the southwest of the Russian Empire to practice grape juice treatment — an innovative wellness approach that attracted visitors from across the empire. At the invitation of Prince Fedor Lvovich, grandson of P.Kh. Wittgenstein, Austrian builders arrived in Kamenka to construct a two-story kurhaus (spa house) within the park, complete with residential quarters, a buffet, restaurant, reading room, billiard room and dance hall. Small resort cottages were built nearby for additional guests, establishing the foundations of what would become a celebrated therapeutic destination.
After a period of non-functioning, the Kamenka health resort experienced revival in the 1930s, with the grand opening of the first sanatorium in the Moldavian Autonomous SSR taking place in 1935. A major expansion followed in 1976 with the commissioning of a new sanatorium complex comprising two dormitories accommodating 450 visitors, a treatment and manipulation section, a swimming pool and therapeutic baths, a concert hall, library and a spacious canteen capable of simultaneously serving up to 600 guests — all set within a large surrounding park at the heart of which the resort building sits.
Today the Dnestr Health Resort stands as one of the most modern and technically equipped therapeutic facilities in the region, applying contemporary methods of treatment and diagnosis. The therapeutic offerings range from specialized baths — including radon baths — to all types of therapeutic massage and numerous additional wellness treatments. A dedicated drinking pump room, arranged above a well of mineral water, provides guests with access to both cold and warm healing mineral water of the “Dnestryanka” brand — continuing a therapeutic water tradition at this remarkable resort that has endured for a century and a half.
