Museum of Anton Rubinstein, Vykhvatintsy Village

The Museum of Anton Rubinstein opened on November 26, 1994, housed in a building constructed in 1901 by colleagues and apprentices of A.G. Rubinstein — the famous Russian pianist, conductor and composer born in the nearby village of Ofatinti. This museum stands as a tribute to one of the 19th century’s most celebrated musical figures, the founder of the first Russian conservatory, whose legacy continues to resonate throughout the world of classical music.

The first exhibition hall presents an original portrait of A.G. Rubinstein alongside his personal belongings, books containing opera scores and other exhibits generously donated from the collections of the Leningrad Conservatory Museum — artifacts that bring the great musician’s personal and professional life into intimate focus for visitors.

The second hall shifts attention to the remarkable history of the village itself, which proves to be of extraordinary archaeological significance. Excavations in Ofatinti uncovered one of the first known camps of primitive people anywhere in Eastern Europe, with evidence of human habitation stretching back approximately 300,000 years. A burial monument of the late Trypillya culture, dating to the 3rd millennium BC, was also discovered here — making this village a place of genuinely profound prehistoric importance alongside its celebrated musical heritage.

The third hall completes the museum’s narrative with materials honoring the village’s residents who participated in the Great Patriotic War and other military conflicts, connecting this community’s ancient past and cultural glory to the sacrifices of more recent generations.
