Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary holds a uniquely significant place in Tiraspol’s religious history, having become the very first church built in the city following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Constructed in 1998, it was created specifically in memory of an earlier church of the same dedication that had stood in the center of Tiraspol since the 19th century before being destroyed by Soviet authorities in the 1930s.

Remarkably, a site for the new church had already been designated back in 1989, during the final years of the Soviet era, with construction beginning at that time. Architect A.N. Cherdantsev designed the project, and the effort drew support from virtually every enterprise and organization in the city — a genuine community-wide commitment to restoring a place of worship to Tiraspol. The lower church was consecrated in 1993, with the upper church following five years later.

For several years, the Church of the Intercession effectively served as the principal church of both the Pridnestrovian capital and the entire Dubossary Vicariate, with church administration also based here until a dedicated Orthodox center was completed elsewhere in the city. The church’s iconostasis was painted by Tver artists working in the old Russian style, adding particular artistic distinction to the interior. Today, the church maintains a library, a Sunday school for children and the parish newspaper “Pokrovsky Listok,” continuing its role as an active and vibrant center of community religious life.
