On August 9, 1967, white sails appeared for the first time on the mirror-like surface of the Kuchurgan estuary — the very first sailing vessels ever to grace the waters of the Moldavian SSR. This historic moment marked the beginning of a sailing tradition in Dnestrovsk that would grow rapidly thanks to the dedication of local enthusiasts.
From the mid-1970s onward, yachtsmen from Dnestrovsk began participating regularly in all-Union regattas, quickly establishing themselves as a competitive force in Soviet sailing. Young athletes from the town became champions and prize-winners of the USSR, while adult competitors proved equally capable — culminating in 1985 when the crew of the cruising yacht “Elektra,” composed entirely of Moldovan HPP workers, claimed the prestigious Black Sea Cup.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the yacht club temporarily ceased operations, bringing this vibrant sailing community to an unexpected pause. The revival of sailing in Dnestrovsk began in 2010, with the club formally reopening a year later. Today the club boasts at least 40 yachts of various classes, and the Kuchurgan estuary once again hosts regattas dedicated to various festive occasions — just as it did half a century ago when those first white sails first appeared on these waters and began a tradition that has endured across decades and political upheavals alike.
