Bendery Brewery

JSC “Bendery Brewery” is one of the most historically significant enterprises in the city, with roots stretching back to 1860 when a brewery was first established on the banks of the Dniester River. This original facility produced beer continuously until the Great Patriotic War, when a direct hit from an aerial bomb brought its operations to an abrupt and tragic end.

The brewing tradition in Bendery actually predates even this 1860 establishment. Following the annexation of Bessarabia to Russia in 1812, the previously underdeveloped region began populating and developing rapidly, encouraged by a range of benefits offered by the tsarist government. By 1818, Bendery had become a district center, with small manufacturing enterprises opening throughout the city. Among these, the milling and brewing industries proved the most dynamic and successful. Museum records confirm that beer was being produced in Bendery from at least the middle of the 19th century, a fact evidenced by one of the brewery’s most treasured exhibits — a glass bottle bearing a relief pre-revolutionary inscription reading “Dniester Brewery.” This historical artifact is further corroborated by records from a glass container manufacturer in Novocherkassk, Rostov region, Russia, where these distinctive historical bottles were originally produced.

Today, the brewery produces a beloved range of beers including “Staraya Krepost — Classic,” “SK Original,” “SK Yubileinoye” and the flagship “Staraya Krepost” brand, which has been the most recognized beer in the region since 1996. The product portfolio also encompasses soft drinks, sugar, kvass and the mineral water “Varnitsa-3,” with the production of alcoholic beverages having been successfully resumed.
