Gorky Cinema

The story of cinema in this corner of Bendery stretches back to the early 20th century, when a Capitol cinema operated near the current site, adjacent to the hotel Petrograd, until the middle of the century. In 1954, construction began on an entirely new building designed by V.P. Mednek, the chief architect of the city and author of the master plan for Bendery’s post-war development — the same talented architect whose work shaped several of the city’s most significant public structures.

Gorky Cinema was among the very first to open in the post-war Moldavian SSR, and its distinctive architecture immediately established it as one of the symbols of the city. Columns, elegant capitals and ornamental molding gave the building a refined classical character that complemented the surrounding historic center of Bendery naturally and harmoniously, while also holding the distinction of being the first venue in Moldova to install a wide cinema screen.

Following a major renovation, the cinema reopened its doors in November 2009, continuing its role as one of the oldest functioning cinemas in the republic and remaining a genuine center of cultural life for the residents of Bendery to this day.
