The building housing the Pridnestrovian State Art Museum has served many different purposes across its long history. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries it housed a library, before becoming a tax office during the Romanian occupation, then a city polyclinic in the post-war years. Its transformation into a cultural institution began on August 1, 1971, when an art gallery was established here by order of the Council of Ministers of the MSSR — an initiative driven by A.I. Matsnev, First Secretary of the Bendery Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova. The gallery’s first director was A.V. Losev, whose name was given to the institution in 2002 in recognition of his founding contribution. In March 2013, the gallery was elevated to its current status as the Pridnestrovian State Art Museum.
Today, the museum’s collections represent one of the most significant repositories of artistic heritage in the republic, comprising a seven-thousand-piece collection spanning paintings, drawings, sculptures, decorative and applied arts, photography and philately. Together these works form the heart of the museum and stand as a vital component of the broader cultural heritage of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, drawing visitors who seek genuine engagement with the region’s rich artistic legacy.
