Buket Moldavii Plant on a Transnistria bus tour

The “Buket Moldavii” winery stands as one of the most iconic symbols of both the Dubossary district and Pridnestrovie as a whole, a producer whose name has been synonymous with quality Moldovan winemaking for more than a century. Today the brand produces over 60 types of alcoholic products crafted according to original recipes: flavored vermouths, table and sparkling wines, bitters, liqueurs, balsams and divins aged from 3 to 8 years. The company also produces healthy herbal teas, with all products made exclusively from natural raw materials grown across the winery’s 500 hectares of legendary vineyards.

The company’s history stretches back to the early 1920s, when a cooperative artel was established on the site of a pre-revolutionary distillery. The enterprise suffered significant damage and looting during the war years, but was effectively rebuilt from 1946 onward, rapidly expanding its production in the decades that followed. The winemaking season of 1965 brought a remarkable milestone: more than 40,000 tons of grapes were processed here in a single season, setting a record for the entire Soviet wine industry. The “Buket Moldavii” trademark became recognized throughout the USSR, with bottles bearing its distinctive label appearing across the vast country.

The most extraordinary chapter in the winery’s history, however, involves a product that literally reached for the stars. In 1976, the winery was commissioned by the Central Design Bureau of Experimental Mechanical Engineering — now the S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation “Energia” — with the participation of the Cosmonaut Training Center named after Y.A. Gagarin, to create the “Sanatate” balsam, meaning “health” in Moldovan. This unique and exceptionally concentrated drink, saturated with biologically active, tonic, aromatic and nutritional substances unlike anything produced anywhere else in the world, was manufactured exclusively for Star City for several years before industrial production began in 1982 under the name “Kosmicheskiy.” The label design still in use today was created by celebrated Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov — the first human being to walk in outer space. In 2016, to mark Leonov’s anniversary, the winery produced a special personalized balsam “Cosmonaut Leonov” in his honor.
