“Yagorlyk” holds the unique distinction of being the only scientific nature reserve in all of Pridnestrovie. Located on the left bank of the Dniester River between the villages of Tsybulevka, Goyany and Doibany-1 in the Dubossary district, the reserve encompasses 863 hectares of protected natural landscape. Established in 1988 specifically to preserve the natural complex of the Goyan Bay — a body of water formed when the lower reaches of the Yagorlyk River were flooded following the construction of the Dubossary hydroelectric dam — the reserve has since become one of the most significant ecological sites in the republic.
Decades of botanical research have identified more than a hundred species of rare and endangered plants within the reserve’s territory, with 16 of these specifically listed in the Red Book of Pridnestrovie. The fauna proves equally impressive: more than 30 mammal species inhabit the reserve, including roe deer, wild boars, stone martens, foxes and raccoon dogs, alongside genuinely rare species such as the European ground squirrel and the ermine. The water area supports approximately 20 fish species, including the protected sturgeon varieties sterlet and bester, connecting this reserve to broader regional efforts to conserve these remarkable ancient fish.
Bird life is particularly abundant here, with 121 distinct species recorded within the reserve — a diversity explained by the remarkable variety of biotopes present throughout this protected landscape. The mute swan nests here permanently, while osprey and field harrier can be observed during migration periods, adding seasonal excitement for birdwatching visitors.
An observation tower positioned on the hill above the bay provides a beautiful panoramic view across the reserve and its surrounding natural environment — the perfect vantage point for appreciating the full extent of this remarkable protected landscape.
