The Cathedral of All Saints

The Cathedral of All Saints stands as one of the oldest churches in all of Pridnestrovie, with its founding dating to April 25, 1797, blessed by Metropolitan Gabriel of Dnieper and Tauride (Banulescu-Bodoni). Construction continued until 1804, with the temple’s building funded by the merchant Mikhail Zoyanov and his partner Ivan Shevich — generous benefactors whose contribution gave Dubossary one of its most enduring landmarks. Before the revolution, the cathedral maintained a two-class parish school and an orchard, serving the community’s educational and spiritual needs simultaneously.

The Soviet era brought the church’s active religious life to an abrupt halt, with various institutions, warehouses and services occupying the building at different times. After the war, in 1953, a cycling school was located within its walls — a particularly striking repurposing of this sacred space.

The cathedral’s revival began in the late 1980s, when enterprises and residents of the town collectively transferred substantial funds for its restoration, while townspeople donated valuable icons and church utensils from their personal collections — a heartfelt community effort to reclaim this historic place of worship. In 1998, Bishop Justinian of Tiraspol and Dubossary formally consecrated the cathedral’s altar, restoring its original name and fully returning the building to its religious purpose.

Today, the cathedral holds particularly precious relics: icons containing fragments of the relics of St. Jonah the Wonderworker of Odessa and Metropolitan Gabriel — the same Metropolitan whose blessing marked the cathedral’s original founding in 1797, creating a remarkable spiritual connection across more than two centuries of the church’s history.
