Chapel of the Icon of the Mother of God “Three Hands”

This Orthodox chapel, housing the icon of the Mother of God “The Three-Handed,” was built specifically to honor the foundation of Grigoriopol — a deeply meaningful act of commemoration connecting the city’s 18th-century origins to its contemporary religious life. The initiative for the chapel’s construction came from Bishop Justinian of Tiraspol and Dubossary, alongside Yu.E. Nilov, P.G. Denisenko and the head of the state administration I.I. Zynnik.

The chapel’s location carries profound historical and spiritual significance: it was erected on the precise site where the foundation stone of Grigoriopol was laid on July 25, 1792. This date holds a remarkable double meaning within the Orthodox calendar — July 25 is also the feast day of the icon of the Mother of God “The Three-Handed,” one of the most venerated Marian icons in the Orthodox tradition. This meaningful coincidence of civic founding and religious feast day led to the “Three-Handed” icon being adopted as the patron icon of Grigoriopol, and its installation in the newly erected chapel transformed this site of historical commemoration into an active place of spiritual devotion — uniting the city’s founding moment with its Orthodox heritage in a single sacred location.
