Church of the Ascension of the Lord

The stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Grigoriopol was built in 1821 through the dedicated efforts and financial contributions of local parishioners, establishing a place of Orthodox worship that has served this community across two centuries of dramatic historical change.

During the Soviet era, the church experienced the closure that affected so many religious buildings throughout the region — not once but twice, first in the 1920s and again in the 1960s, each closure reflecting a renewed wave of anti-religious policy that interrupted the community’s worship for extended periods.

The path toward restoration began in 1990, when the church building was formally returned to the Orthodox community after decades of closure. Three years later, the roof was restored, and a year after that the iconostasis was installed and the church’s interior painting was completed — a carefully sequenced program of renewal that gradually brought this historic building back to its full spiritual and aesthetic glory.

Today, the Grigoriopol Church of the Ascension of the Lord carries the status of a monument of architecture and urban development of national importance, placing it under formal state protection and recognizing its significance not only to the local community but to the broader cultural and architectural heritage of Pridnestrovie.
