Church of the Archangel Michael, Khrustovaya Village

The history of the Church of the Archangel Michael in Khrustovaya village stretches back approximately three centuries, making it one of the oldest religious sites in the Kamenka district. The current church building — a single-domed structure built in the Byzantine style — was completed by 1853, and its dramatic setting adds considerably to its visual impact: the temple stands on a mountain, surrounded by huge blocks of sandstone that tower above the village below, creating a naturally imposing and memorable silhouette against the northern Pridnestrovian sky.

The Soviet era brought the closure and degradation that afflicted so many religious buildings throughout the region. The church building first served as a village club for an extended period, before being repurposed as a pesticide warehouse — a particularly unfortunate use for a building of such historical and spiritual significance. Restoration finally began in 1991, with the church simultaneously consecrated in honor of the Archangel Michael at the start of this renewal process. The restoration proceeded methodically: the roof was repaired, domes and an iconostasis were installed in stages, murals reappeared on the church walls, and eventually cells and a refectory were constructed to complete the monastic complex.

The most recent significant addition came in 2011-2012, when a large bell tower rising 37 meters in height was erected alongside the church and crowned with a cross, with 10 bells mounted within its structure — completing this centuries-old church’s transformation from a neglected Soviet-era warehouse back into one of the most architecturally striking and spiritually active religious sites in the Kamenka district.
