Memorial Home-Museum of Ion Soltys

The Memorial Home-Museum of Ion Soltys was inaugurated in the very house where this Hero of the Soviet Union was born, opened during the lifetime of his parents in 1958 — a particularly touching detail that allowed those who knew and loved Ivan Sidorovich Soltys to witness the formal recognition of his extraordinary sacrifice.

Soltys was born in Kuzmin village on January 5, 1923, and joined the Red Army in 1944, participating in the liberation of Moldavia and Poland before making his ultimate sacrifice on February 11, 1945, near the Polish village of Luisenthal, where he threw himself onto an enemy pillbox to shield his comrades with his own body. For this supreme act of selfless heroism, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

A monument honoring the hero was erected in his native village on January 26, 1965, funded through a particularly heartfelt source: contributions raised by schoolchildren from throughout the country, who collectively pooled their resources to ensure their hero received a lasting tribute. This connection to the younger generation has proven enduring — the monument continues to be looked after by the sixth generation of schoolchildren, creating an unbroken chain of youthful custodianship that spans six decades and speaks to the lasting power of Soltys’s example to inspire successive generations.
