The Stalin Line Historical and Cultural Complex

This former pillbox, constructed in the 1930s to protect the strategic banks of the Dniester River, represents one of the most significant surviving examples of Soviet pre-war defensive engineering in all of Pridnestrovie. Pillbox-24A was among the most powerful fortified positions within the entire Rybnitsa fortified area, designed and equipped with the most advanced military technology available at the time of its construction.

The combat unit incorporated two casemates: a three-gun embrasure and a two-cannon artillery half-caponier, together creating a formidable defensive position along this crucial stretch of the Dniester. What makes this structure truly remarkable, however, is the extraordinary complexity of the underground portion — a genuinely self-contained subterranean facility that functioned almost like an underground city within its limited space.

Twelve separate rooms served various essential purposes throughout the bunker: ventilation and domestic living spaces, warehouses for supplies and equipment, an independent water supply and sanitation system, and a dedicated power station among other facilities necessary for sustaining the garrison’s life within this fortification. The opening of this historical and cultural complex, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Victory in World War II, has allowed visitors to explore these remarkable underground corridors — 300 meters of which have been cleared and restored — for the first time, connecting modern visitors directly to the hidden defensive infrastructure of the pre-war Soviet era.
