Monastery of St. John the Baptist (Kalagur Area)

On December 31, 2003, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church blessed the opening of a monastery dedicated to the Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist in the Kalagur area of the Rybnitsa district. The monastery was established at a complex of buildings formerly belonging to the pioneer camp “Era,” situated near Stroentsy village in one of the most genuinely picturesque settings in all of Pridnestrovie — nestled in the forest on a hillside high above the Dniester River.

Construction of a Cathedral Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist began on the monastery grounds in summer 2010, though work subsequently had to be paused. In May 2016, a new vision emerged: the creation of a wooden church in honor of Sophia the Wisdom of God. Construction began on August 2, 2016, and the resulting church stands today as the only example of wooden church architecture anywhere in Pridnestrovie — a genuinely unique contribution to the region’s religious heritage. The church features an oak iconostasis and bells in its bell tower, completing this distinctive and beautiful place of worship.

In 2012, with the blessing of His Eminence Bishop Savva, a chapel was added to the monastery grounds, housing one of the monastery’s most revered and cherished shrines — the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Seeking of the Lost,” which draws pilgrims seeking the intercession of this beloved holy image.
