Museum of Military Glory of the Town of Rybnitsa

The Museum of Military Glory of Rybnitsa opened on May 9, 2010 — the 65th anniversary of Victory Day — in a location of profound historical significance: the very building where, during the Great Patriotic War, the Nazi occupiers established a prison and held political prisoners including partisans, underground fighters and others who resisted the occupation.

The museum’s exposition covers an impressive breadth of wartime history connected to Rybnitsa and its residents. Materials document the participation of local people in the suppression of fascist uprisings in Spain and Portugal, before turning to the three years of occupation endured by the city itself, the partisan movement, the Rybnitsa underground organization and the involvement of local residents in the major battles of the Great Patriotic War. Particularly sobering is the account of the tragic fate of 270 Soviet patriots who were shot in this very prison on the eve of the city’s liberation from German-Romanian invaders — a devastating final act of occupation that this museum ensures will never be forgotten.

Among the museum’s tangible artifacts of wartime life are a trophy accordion, a camera, a loudspeaker, military uniform, a Maxim machine gun, shell casings and numerous other items that bring the human reality of the conflict vividly to life. A dedicated exhibition section addresses the history of Pridnestrovie, covering the armed conflict of the early 1990s, the residents of the region who died during this struggle, and those who contributed to the region’s subsequent development.
