Memorial of Glory

The Memorial Complex of Military Glory has become one of the most recognizable and emotionally significant symbols of the city of Slobodzeya. Designed by architect I. Eltman and installed in 1954, the memorial was erected on the mass grave of soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War. The central obelisk of military glory rises 14 meters in height, accompanied by four sculptural groups standing 3.5 meters tall and gravestone marble slabs marking the resting places of those buried here.

The entrance to the memorial takes the form of an Arch — a deeply symbolic choice representing the vault of heaven, with the act of passing through it symbolizing a kind of new birth and the union of heaven and earth. The memorial’s monumental relief emphasizes the continuity of generations, expresses the glory of heroes, and serves as a solemn reminder of the human losses and horrors of war that this site was created to commemorate.

The broader architectural ensemble of the Memorial extends its reach beyond the Great Patriotic War to honor sacrifices from other conflicts: a monument to the defenders of Pridnestrovie stands within the complex, alongside a monument marking the burial place of A. Gusar — defender of Pridnestrovie and chief of staff of the people’s militia — as well as a tribute to soldier-internationalists who died during the war in Afghanistan. Together, these elements create a comprehensive memorial that connects the sacrifices of World War II to the more recent struggles that have shaped modern Pridnestrovie.
