Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker holds a special place in Tiraspol’s religious heritage as a testament to the revival of Orthodox faith in the city following the Soviet era. In 1991, members of the Orthodox community formally petitioned the Tiraspol City Council for land to build a new church, and the executive committee responded favorably, allocating a plot specifically for a church dedicated to St. Nicholas, the miracle worker of Myra.

Construction began in February 1994, with the community coming together to make this project a reality. The church’s bells were purchased with funds donated by the Odema enterprise and crafted in Voronezh, receiving their consecration on August 26, 1995, before being raised to the bell tower. The following year brought further milestones: on the feast of the Holy Trinity in 1996, a cross was consecrated for the bell tower, and in December of the same year — fittingly on the feast of St. Nicholas himself — the dome was erected and crowned with a cross. Bishop Justinian of Tiraspol and Dubossary personally performed the bishop’s divine service on this significant day. All work related to the dome’s design, manufacture and installation was carried out by the Tiraspolsky Prommontazh enterprise, with construction of the entire church reaching completion in 1998.
