Gagarin Boulevard

Gagarin Boulevard occupies a central place in the daily life of Tiraspol’s student community, situated adjacent to Pridnestrovian State University and the Cyril and Methodius Cultural and Educational Center — making it a natural and beloved gathering spot for students seeking a moment of relaxation between studies.

The boulevard carries a particularly charming historical footnote: it was once known as Sportivny Boulevard, but was renamed in honor of Yuri Gagarin on the very day of his historic spaceflight — April 12, 1961 — a spontaneous tribute reflecting the immediate and profound impact that the first human journey into space had on communities throughout the Soviet Union.

Sixteen years later, in 1977, a bust of the first cosmonaut was unveiled here, created by Moscow sculptor and Honored Artist of the RSFSR B.I. Dyuzhev in collaboration with Tiraspol architects Ya. Druzhinin and V. Vakarev — a permanent celebration of the man whose name the boulevard proudly bears.
