At the moment, it is the only place where items of the ancient history of our region, discovered as a result of archaeological excavations, are exhibited and stored. The exhibition presents unique artifacts from the Stone Age (100 thousand years ago) to the Middle Ages (12th-14th centuries) – tools, weapons and horse equipment, jewelry, cult objects, molded and pottery ceramics. The exposition is supplemented by reconstructions of ancient burials, a display case with artificially deformed skulls and traces of trepanation, as well as photos of archaeological research and artistic reconstructions. The Archaeology Museum of Pridnestrovie opened its doors in 1997 at T.G. Shevchenko State University, established on the foundation of the university’s research laboratory “Archaeology.” It holds the distinction of being the only institution in the region where artifacts from the ancient history of Pridnestrovie — discovered through decades of archaeological excavations — are both exhibited and preserved for future study.

The exhibition takes visitors on a remarkable journey through time, presenting unique artifacts spanning from the Stone Age, some 100,000 years ago, through to the medieval period of the 12th-14th centuries. Tools, weapons and horse equipment, jewelry, cult objects, and examples of both molded and pottery ceramics are all represented, painting a vivid picture of human life along the Dniester across countless millennia. The exposition is further enriched by reconstructions of ancient burials, a display case featuring artificially deformed skulls and traces of trepanation, alongside photographs documenting archaeological research and artistic reconstructions that bring the distant past to life for contemporary visitors.

The monument of Catherine the Great is one of the main objects of the Catherine park in the center of Tiraspol. The monument was opened on September 1, 2020, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Republic. It weighs one and a half tons, and the height of the monument is about 4.5 meters. The bronze monument to Catherine reminds all citizens where the history of Tiraspol began. The years of the reign of Catherine the Great (1762-1796) were generally marked by a significant strengthening of the international authority of the Russian Empire, high-profile victories of Russian weapons and territorial acquisitions. During this period, the territory of current Pridnestrovie was also included in Russia. By decree of Empress Catherine the Great, the city of Grigoriopol and the Sredinnaya fortress were founded here. Around Sredinnaya fortress the city of Tiraspol grew later. The fortress was designed by a Dutchman in Russian service, Franz De-Volan, and the construction was inspected by the outstanding Russian commander Alexander Suvorov. With the inclusion of Pridnestrovie into Russia in Catherine’s era and over the next 125 years, a single multi-ethnic socio-cultural community was formed here, from which the people of Pridnestrovie were formed.

This magnificent bronze monument weighs one and a half tons and rises approximately 4.5 meters, its commanding presence serving as a constant reminder to citizens and visitors alike of where the history of Tiraspol truly began.

The reign of Catherine the Great (1762-1796) stands as one of the most consequential periods in Russian imperial history, marked by a significant strengthening of the empire’s international authority, celebrated military victories and important territorial acquisitions. During this era, the territory of present-day Pridnestrovie was incorporated into the Russian Empire, setting in motion the chain of events that would ultimately give birth to the city of Tiraspol.

By imperial decree, Catherine the Great founded the city of Grigoriopol and ordered the construction of the Sredinnaya Fortress — the fortification around which Tiraspol would gradually grow. The fortress was designed by Franz De-Wollant, a Dutchman serving in the Russian imperial service, with construction personally inspected by the legendary Russian commander Alexander Suvorov.

With Pridnestrovie’s incorporation into Russia during Catherine’s era and over the following 125 years, a single multi-ethnic socio-cultural community gradually formed here — the foundation from which the people of Pridnestrovie ultimately emerged.
