Shevchenko Pridnestrovian State University

Shevchenko Pridnestrovian State University carries the legacy of the oldest institution of higher education in the republic, tracing its origins directly to the Tiraspol State Pedagogical Institute, founded in 1930. The university’s original building, designed by architect M. Petrov, still stands today as Building “B” of the modern campus — a living architectural connection to the institution’s founding era.

In the garden adjacent to Teatralnaya Square, directly in front of this historic building, stands a granite monument to the celebrated Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, whose name was given to the university to mark the 125th anniversary of the “Great Kobzar” — a fitting tribute connecting this academic institution to one of the defining figures of Ukrainian literary culture.

The university grounds offer one more delightful surprise: in the student park nearby stands a statue of a student whose appearance bears a striking resemblance to the beloved literary character Harry Potter, making it one of the more unexpected and charming photo opportunities anywhere in Tiraspol.
