Temple of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church

In 2019, a distinctive wooden log church was erected on Fedko Street, positioned near the historic Powder Cellar of St. Vladimir Bastion — and deliberately so, as the location stands adjacent to a site where victims of political repressions were shot and buried in a common grave during the 1930s. This deeply meaningful placement connects the church directly to the memory of those who suffered for their faith during the darkest years of Soviet anti-religious persecution.

The construction materials for this unique wooden temple were carefully selected in and brought from Western Ukraine, where the appropriate tree species could be sourced. The church was first assembled in its entirety at the place of origin, following detailed architectural drawings, before being disassembled and transported to Pridnestrovie to be reconstructed here — a remarkable logistical undertaking that speaks to the care invested in every aspect of this project.

The church is also affectionately known as the Cossack Church, owing to the fact that it was a military chieftain of the Black Sea Cossack Troops who originally proposed creating the building in this distinctive traditional wooden form — connecting this place of worship to the broader Cossack heritage that has left its mark throughout the region’s history.
