“Radiant Pages of Russian Music” Concert

The State Symphony Orchestra of the PMR closes its 31st concert season with this performance, held, as is tradition, on the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture. The program brings together genuine masterpieces of Russian classical music, composed by figures who stand among the world’s greatest musical masters.

Audiences will hear the luminous, energetic Symphony in E minor by the gifted A.A. Alyabyev, celebrated worldwide for his romance “The Nightingale.” The program also includes N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Russian Easter Overture” (“Bright Holiday”), dedicated to the memory of M. Mussorgsky and A. Borodin — one of the finest examples of Russian program symphonic music, capturing the joyous atmosphere of Easter, where deep spirituality meets folk celebration.

The evening culminates with a landmark work of Russian and world music — S.V. Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Combining true monumentality and brilliant pianism with deep emotional richness and vivid melodic writing, this piece secured Rachmaninoff’s place among the greatest masters of Russian and world music; it is widely regarded as a pinnacle of Romantic music and one of the most frequently performed works in the world.

The concerto will be performed by Alexander Ptashnik, laureate of numerous international competitions. This talented young pianist, who has already performed successfully with the orchestra, is a graduate of the S. Rachmaninoff Republican Music Lyceum in Chișinău. He has won prizes at international piano competitions in Romania, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, and elsewhere, and has toured extensively with the M. Bieșu National Opera and Ballet Theater.
